Behavioural Training

Behavioural Training

When our dog’s behaviour doesn’t seem to fit into our expectations, either at home or out in the real world, we may see this as a behavioural issue. In other words, unwanted behaviours we would rather replace with more desirable behaviours.

At Harrogate Dog Training I can help you explore yours and your dog’s understanding of what is ‘normal’ for your dog and how we can work on getting to where you want to be by adjusting our approach to training so we get the new behaviours we really want.

From barking or lunging at other dogs while out on lead walks, running over to absolutely every other human or dog to interact while ignoring our efforts to recall, chasing birds or squirrels while seemingly ‘going deaf’ to our cues, water skiing behind our dog on lead walks, to teaching calm behaviours that make our dog feel safe and secure either out in the big world or at home with their human family. Oh! Don’t forget that little gem – adolescent rebellion – advice on how to best keep our relationship with our dog on track at this tricky time!

Stay positive – there is a solution!

Home Consultation

I come to you! We can have a look at what you would like to change whether that is how to work on overly exuberant behaviours indoors or how to start some self-control exercises we can aim to then take outdoors  – it is all about relationship building and establishing a clear dialogue with our dog and often setting some predictable boundaries that our dog can understand clearly, starts at home!

Outdoor Practical

Let’s do this! At Harrogate Dog Training I will advise on any equipment, such as harness or long line, for off lead training that you may need in advance of our session. We will meet up at a suitable outdoor venue where we can work on training in the behaviours we want in favour of fading out behaviours we can live without …..

Sometimes it is best to work in your garden or around your immediate home environment to begin a training plan and at other times we can go straight to open public space to start making the difference we want for ourselves and our dog. This will depend on the behaviour you want to modify and learning to date.

Telephone Consultation

It may be that you would like some advice and sometimes it is entirely appropriate to have a chat on the telephone to iron out your doubts and give you appropriate advice.  Block bookings can also be useful to help guide you through a tricky phase to help give you confidence that you and your dog are on track; having friendly, knowledgeable support over a period of time could be exactly what you need!
